There’s a question that comes up time and again when homeowners are choosing curtains, and it’s one that doesn’t always get a straight answer: why do some curtains fall in those gorgeous, clean folds while others look a bit limp and unconvincing, even when the fabric seems perfectly nice on the roll?

The answer, more often than not, comes down to fabric weight. It’s one of those behind-the-scenes factors that has an enormous influence on the finished result, and understanding it properly will save you from a very expensive disappointment.

What Do We Mean By Fabric Weight?

Curtain fabric weight is exactly what it sounds like: how heavy the fabric is per square metre. It’s usually measured in gsm (grams per square metre), and it varies enormously across different fabric types. A lightweight cotton voile might come in at around 80gsm, while a dense interlined curtain fabric could sit well above 300gsm.

The weight of the fabric determines how it behaves once it’s cut, lined, and hanging from a pole. Heavier fabrics drop with authority and hold a fold beautifully. Lighter fabrics can feel airy and elegant, but require more careful handling to stop them looking insubstantial.

Lightweight Fabrics: Where They Work and Where They Don’t

Lightweight fabrics like voile, sheer linen, and fine cotton have a real place in curtain design. In a sunroom, a bedroom that benefits from soft, diffused morning light, or a window where the view is the main event, a lightweight sheer curtain adds softness without weight or bulk.

The important thing to understand is that lightweight fabrics need generous curtain fullness to compensate for their lack of weight. A sheer fabric cut without enough fullness will look flat and a little sad hanging against a window. The same fabric cut at two and a half times the pole width will billow beautifully and look entirely intentional.

Medium-Weight Fabrics: The Reliable All-Rounders

Cotton, linen blends, and mid-weight woven fabrics sit in the sweet spot for most rooms in a UK home. They have enough weight to hang well and hold a fold, without being so heavy that they become difficult to draw back and forth on a daily basis.

For a living room or bedroom where you want your made-to-measure curtains to look polished and well-considered, a medium-weight fabric with a quality standard lining is a combination that rarely lets you down. The lining adds a little extra body and helps the folds to fall cleanly, even in fabrics that sit at the lighter end of the medium range.

Heavyweight Fabrics: When You Want Real Drama

Velvet, heavy wool, chenille, and thickly woven upholstery-weight fabrics are the heavyweights of the curtain world, and they behave accordingly. A made-to-measure curtain in a quality velvet will fall in deep, sumptuous folds that have a genuinely luxurious quality. They also provide excellent thermal insulation and noise reduction, making them a practical choice for rooms facing busy streets or exposed to cold draughts.

The trade-off is that heavyweight curtains need robust curtain poles and fixings to support them, and they work best in rooms with enough ceiling height to carry the drama they bring. In a well-proportioned living room or a generous main bedroom, though, they are absolutely spectacular.

How Lining Changes Everything

Whatever fabric weight you start with, the curtain lining you choose will alter the final result significantly. A thermal interlining adds considerable body and weight to even a medium-weight fabric, transforming the way it hangs and dramatically improving its insulating properties. A blackout lining does similar work, adding density and helping folds to drop more cleanly.

This is one of the great advantages of choosing made-to-measure curtains: you can specify the exact combination of face fabric and lining that gives you the weight, drape, and performance you need for each individual room.

If your curtains have never quite looked the way you imagined them, fabric weight combined with the right lining is almost certainly where the answer lies. Buy your made-to-measure curtains from The Sewing House, where every detail from fabric weight to lining choice is considered together to give you curtains that hang beautifully from day one.
