We all know that curtains are a brilliant way of turning a bare window into a homely finishing touch — but the art of hanging curtains can make or break a room’s appearance.

The biggest factor in getting your curtains just right? How high you should hang your curtains.

Whether you prefer the tips of your curtains to just touch the floor or bunch up in a luxurious puddle, determining the correct height to hang your curtains is vital to the overall look.

Should I Hang Curtains?

It doesn’t matter what aesthetic you go for in your home, curtains are a brilliant finishing touch that helps to pull the entire space together. But they also serve practical purposes too!

They can block or soften the light that enters your room, keep prying eyes out of your home life, and regulate the temperature both in summer and winter.

General Rules For Hanging Curtains

While there are always exceptions, and you should do what’s best for your unique space, there are a few general interior design rules.

Hanging Curtains In Rooms With Lower Ceilings

If your ceiling allows it, try to aim about 4-6 inches higher than the window frame.

By following this rule and hanging your curtains higher than usual, you’ll create the optical illusion that your windows are larger and your ceilings are higher — which is great if your rooms are a little vertically challenged!

Hanging Curtains In Rooms With Higher Ceilings

If you’ve got a 6-12 inch gap between the ceiling and the window frame, hang the curtain pole midway between the two for an intentional, stylish look.

But if you’re blessed with super-high ceilings, stick to 4-6 inches above the window to keep your curtains looking cohesive with the rest of your room.

Think About The Type Of Curtain Headings You Want

Working out how high your curtains should sit is one thing, but it’s important to note that the type of curtains you have will impact on how high you need to mount your curtain pole.

Curtains hung with rings or tabs will need a curtain pole that’s higher than curtains attached by a rod pocket or eyelets.
